Leading Through Adversity: Michael Mogill + KJC Law Firm

3–4 minutes to read

During this time, it is a common instinct to pull back and shut down in order to preserve. What many people don’t realize is that we have the opportunity RIGHT NOW to reassess and make changes within our business that will benefit us in the future.

In the most recent installment of Leading Through Adversity, Crisp Founder & CEO Michael Mogill sat down with attorney John Martin of KJC Law Firm to explore the ways his firm has used this time to their advantage.

Check out their full conversation here.

1:27 – Be a business. Number one is, we’re running as a business instead of just a law firm. I’ve been suffering under the delusion that if I’m a good trial lawyer, the business is going to come to me. I’ve gotten a lot of good advice from Crisp Coach about how to be more of a business. I’m always like, “I don’t necessarily have time or I want to have more work-life balance.” All of these weaknesses that I allowed to exist in my firm were right up in my face. It’s an awesome opportunity to fix it, and it’s shocking to me what a response we’ve had putting these ideas into effect.

3:49 – Part of the community. We’ve been doing a lot of content for people, and it’s stuff that’s out there for you: business loans, loans for nonprofits, things for artists and for children. I counted them up before this call. I found 120 different comments from people either on our Facebook page or on different posts we’ve done where people say, “Wow, we thank you for what you’re doing for the community.” There’s a massive opportunity here to reach out and be a support and be a good, integral part of the community.

5:23 – Pushing through at maximum level. Some of the team loves the morning huddle format. They’re super go-getters and doing extra stuff, extra goals, and things to build the business every day. Other team members are a bit hesitant with that, but if I send them an email and say, “I need a text, a brief, a blog, or something like that.” They pump it out fast. Everyone is pushing at their maximum level, but they’re also still staying true to their personality and being themselves.

7:52 – Work together. The universe is abundant. There is plenty out there for all of us, and it’s really been a positive change to my life to be working with other lawyers, working together, seeing how they do things and sharing how we’re doing things. The response to things that we’re learning in our coaching sessions — everybody loves it.

9:28 – Follow good advice. When fear knocks at the door and faith answers, nobody’s there. Find good advice. Don’t try to pour in it from an empty cup. When you get good advice, follow it. Even if you’re not 100% sure of the outcome, the result is going to be a hell of a lot better than just being stagnant. Be proactive and get in front of it. You can flourish, and I’m determined to meet that three years in three months.

10:35 – Sphere of influence. Let me tell you what’s funny about six new leads that I got last week. Five of them were in my sphere of influence. They were people who were either my friends on Facebook or friends of friends that did not realize they had a problem. I could help them. I didn’t bring in six strangers. I brought in five people by reaching out to my community saying, “Hey, here I am, here’s what I do, and here’s what we do for people.”
